Until a few years ago, vegan options were usually an afterthought on most restaurant menus. Restaurants provided meat and dairy-free dishes to accommodate vegan diners, but not as much time or thought went into those offerings as the majority of the menu.

But as veganism has become more popular and chefs have taken pride in vegan cooking, Omaha’s restaurants have started offering some fantastic vegan options. Here are 8 restaurants that serve incredible vegan-friendly plates.

Veg.Edible

2740 N. 61st St

Veg.Edible is serious about food sensitivities and lifestyle choices, as everything that comes out of this kitchen is vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free (except coconut) with soy-free options. With a menu of burgers, melts, tacos, and loaded fries, Veg.edible flips diner classics on their head by using Beyond meat, jackfruit, and tofu chick’n. Plus, you can satisfy your sweet tooth with all kinds of gluten-free baked goods, including owner Stacie Van Cleave’s famous cookies, milkshakes, and cake slices.

Kinaara

120 Regency Pkwy

This beloved Indian restaurant has a portion of the menu devoted to vegan dishes. From small plates like Masala Fries and Vegetable Samosa to full entrees such as Tofu Tikka Masala, Aloo Gobi, and Jackfruit Biryani, Kinaara offers a wide range of vegan options, all crafted under the special care of genius chef Ashish Sathyan.

Kitchen Table

1415 Farnam St

While Kitchen Table offers plenty of meat-forward dishes, co-owner Jessica Duggan ensures vegans are welcome to this everything-from-scratch eatery, too. Stop in for breakfast or lunch to savor the Sofrito Quinoa Bowl or Tofu Grits Bowl and sandwiches like The Grilled Sweet Potato Jam and the Buffalo’d Tofu Sandwich.

Nite Owl

3902 Farnam St

This funky bar combines a fun aesthetic with a menu paying major respect to vegan diners. You can enjoy a dimly-lit dining room and campy old movies playing on the TV while you sip a premium craft cocktail and savor some Cauliflower Wings (paired with in-house sauces), the Vegan Burger, or Nite Owl’s famous Tot-Chos.

Blue Sushi Sake Grill

14450 Eagle Run Dr; 16939 Wright Plaza; 416 S 12th St

If you’re craving sushi but sticking to vegan food, Blue Sushi Sake Grill is your place. In addition to vegan appetizers, salads, and sides, the menu boasts over 20 vegan sushi rolls filled with ingredients like BBQ eggplant eel, plant-based tuna, and sautéed tofu.

Blue & Fly Asian Kitchen

721 S 72nd St

Blue & Fly Asian Kitchen is unique in that the first half of the menu is filled with Americanized Chinese dishes like Mongolian Chicken and Broccoli Beef… but this restaurant really focuses on its traditional Chinese dishes that owner Joe Cong brought with him after starting his chef career in China. These include vegan options like Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, Ma Po Tofu, and a delightful Candied Sweet Potato for dessert.

El Basha Mediterranean Grill

7503 Pacific St,

Looking for a meat and dairy-free taste of the Mediterranean? El Basha Mediterranean Grill has just what you’re seeking! This cozy restaurant offers dozens of appetizers, dips, and entrees that are in line with a vegan lifestyle, from smaller plates like Mousaka and Labneh to larger offerings like the Falafel Wrap and Fattoush.

Amsterdam Falafel & Kebab

620 N 50th Street

The menu at Amsterdam Falafel & Kebab might be small, but the flavor is not! The falafel (balls of ground chickpeas that are breaded and fried) are crispy, salty, and delicious, and you can get them served on a salad, on a plate with hummus, or stuffed inside a pita with one of Amsterdam’s four signature vegan sauces.
