Inside Culxr House: Where Omaha Artists Build, Collaborate and Grow
Not every creative space is built for everyone. Culxr House, located in North Omaha, was designed specifically with working artists in mind. It’s a place where experimentation isn’t just tolerated, it’s the whole point.
Founded by musician and community leader Marcey Yates, Culxr House has grown into one of Omaha’s most distinctive spaces for cross-disciplinary creativity, bringing together artists working in fashion, dance, music and visual arts under one roof.
A Space Built by Artists, for Artists
Yates started CULXR House with a clear premise: artists in Omaha needed somewhere to create and connect without the pressure of commercial performance or polished output.
But the vision was never purely individualistic. Yates describes the ethos as “DIY with other people” a collaborative approach to grassroots creativity that prioritizes network-building as much as personal artistic development.
“That’s how you start to grow community and build a network of people who care about a common goal,” Yates said. “A common goal is being able to have a space where you can just be — but at the same time push your creativity.”
Programming and Events at CULXR House
The programming at CULXR House reflects its broad creative mandate. Throughout the year, the space hosts fashion shows, dance competitions, live art battles, youth programs and community workshops. The events are designed to give artists of all ages a platform and a peer group.
A New Kind of Open Mic
One of CULXR House’s newer initiatives is a reinvented monthly open mic. Rather than a standard performance showcase, the format pushes participating artists to collaborate in real time, building fully produced songs from scratch. It’s a meaningful shift, from passive performance to active co-creation and one that sets the space apart from more traditional arts programming in the city.
The Philosophy Behind the Space
For Yates, running Culxr House isn’t just about programming. It’s about what artists owe to the culture they’re part of.
“I think the role that us as artists have in shaping the culture — I think it’s a responsibility,” Yates said. “If we care about the future of it, it’s just about being authentic, creating a space where there can be growth and it can expand.”
That framing of artists as cultural stewards and not just cultural consumers runs through everything CULXR House does, from its youth programming to its competitive showcases.
Upcoming Events at CULXR House
On March 22nd they will hosting a Custom Sneaker Design Workshop from 4-6pm. Their next Art Battle happens on April 4th, which is a live competitive showcase that has become one of the space’s signature events.
