A History of Weather During the CWS
From hours-long rain delays to nearby tornadoes, severe weather in Omaha has played a huge role in the history of the College World Series. Here are a few notable weather-related stories from past CWS tournaments.
1964: The Most Rain-Delayed in Series History
The Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium—where the CWS was held at the time—was so drenched that a helicopter was brought in to help dry the field. Multiple games were rescheduled, prompting officials to introduce the now-iconic College World Series tarp for future tournaments to reduce rain delays and keep the field playable.
2011: Storms, Strong Winds, & Possible Tornadoes
During the Florida vs. Vanderbilt game on June 20th, 2011, storms began developing near Lincoln and moved toward the Omaha area. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Douglas County and other parts of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. With winds reaching up to 70 mph in nearby Saunders County, emergency officials activated the storm sirens, and the game was paused until the following morning to allow fans to take shelter.
2018: 11 Hours of Weather Delays
The amount of rain that fell during the 2018 College World Series led to a record number of delays and postponements—more than any CWS in the previous 15 years. Some delays lasted for several hours, and a few games had to be postponed due to severe weather. This impacted scheduling and travel plans for multiple teams.
What to Expect: Omaha’s June 2026 Weather Forecast
Omaha is expected to begin June 2026 with warm weather, with daily highs generally in the low 80s and overnight lows in the 60s. Temperatures will fluctuate throughout the month, reaching the mid-to-upper 80s by late June. During the College World Series (June 12–22), fans can expect highs ranging from the upper 70s to the upper 80s, with scattered chances of rain throughout the tournament. Fans should dress appropriately to be ready for both sunny and stormy days.
What’s the Best Weather to Play Baseball?
For most players, ideal baseball weather means clear skies, low wind, and moderate temperatures—warm enough to keep muscles loose, but cool enough to stay comfortable in the sun. A light breeze is welcome, but gusts over 15 mph start affecting routine fly balls. Humidity plays a role, too—a little moisture helps the ball carry, particularly at higher elevations.

How to Pack & Prep for Omaha Weather During the CWS
Because Omaha’s summer weather can change quickly, it’s best to prepare for every scenario. Here’s what locals recommend for staying safe and comfortable in sun or rain.
- Bring a clear bag no larger than 12x12x6 inches—per the stadium’s official bag policy—to carry essential items like sunscreen and sunglasses.
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothing, such as moisture-wicking shirts, athletic shorts, and linen fabrics. Avoid dark colors and heavy materials like denim.

- Bring a rain jacket or poncho in case of rain. Leave your umbrella at home because they’re prohibited inside the ballpark.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes or waterproof sandals for rainy days.
- If you’re sensitive to sun, consider choosing seats near home plate or along the first base line for maximum shade protection.
- Monitor weather patterns during your game days via local weather stations and radar.
- Stay hydrated. Bring a plastic or refillable water bottle that is 20 oz or smaller—per Charles Schwab Stadium’s official policy. There are multiple refill stations throughout the stadium for your use.
